A Note from Me...
(Click here to jump straight to the first section.)
I have always loved animals and nature, and it was in my Zoology class in high school that it dawned on me how much the Earth was suffering. I was frightened to discover how humans, myself included, were supporting the overfishing of tons of life from the vibrant oceans, polluting waters with plastic, setting fires to precious forests, and destroying the planet and its inhabitants in many more ways. Since then, I have realized that caring for the precious environment isn't an afterthought, but a responsibility shared by all of us.
I wrote this blog as a compilation of the information and eco-tips I have discovered, in an effort to inspire sustainability, thoughtful conversation, meaningful action, and hope for the future! Here are ideas from me, Kristen, to you, on ways we can help the environment together!
And thank you so much for being here in the first place! Nobody needs to be perfect to make an impact, but if we combine our efforts, we can make a massive impact! :)
Click the boxes below to start your journey. (But first, a couple important reminders - please READ, especially if under 18 years old...)
✿ !!! The information in this presentation comes from my personal research (I am not an expert, and this is starter information... You should continue to read scientific articles too!) Always consult your parents and do your own research before making any important changes if you are under 18 :)!!!
✿ Balance is the most important thing when starting your journey. Don't be too hard on yourself, or beat yourself up over little mistakes. Be kind to yourself, but don't use it as an excuse to ignore your responsibilities! And always remember, big corporations are most at fault for environmental degradation, but you can still do you part and it will make a world of a difference! :)

Why You Should Care...

(I do not own these photos)
Historically, the Earth has survived in harmony despite natural changes that occurred over millions of years, but since humans have arrived, we have caused severe and incomparable devastation in the span of just several decades...
The impactful video below shows how we have affected the world in just 3 seconds.
The video suggests that humans are very smart, but not wise, since we take this planet for granted and harm it in many ways. I know that we can change this when we start taking action, and it starts with addressing our effects on the environment:
1. Due to human activity, the Earth is currently undergoing its 6th Mass Extinction Event, accelerating the normal rate of species loss to "a thousand times what the normal rate is." (To put into perspective how serious this is, a previous Extinction Event was the famous extinction of the dinosaurs.) It is predicted that "one-third of all animal and plant species on the planet could face extinction by 2070 due to climate change," (Source) and the oceans could be void of fish by 2050. Some leading causes of this extinction are deforestation (caused by animal agriculture and paper products), overexploitation (hunting and fishing), and climate change. (Source) Visit Animal Planet or IUCN'S Red List to see the long list of endangered species. Click here to jump to the section on my blog on how to help them.

2. Human activities such as driving, using electricity, producing goods, and animal agriculture has pumped the air with massive amounts of gasses that cause global warming, leading to extreme weather, sea level rise, ocean acidification, poor air quality and more.
"The last two decades of the 20th century have been hottest in the past 400 years..." (Source)
A chain reaction caused by these effects will lead to a world where we need to wear specialized masks everyday to protect our lungs from the hot and heavy air, clogged with particulate pollution... There will be longer and more intense heat waves, extreme hurricanes, tropical storms, fires and floods, and parts of the world will become inhabitable (like the Western US, Southern Spain, Portugal, Australia, North Africa) or sunken underneath the risen sea levels (Florida.. Venice, Italy.. Bangkok, Thailand..) And those that still live in the hottest places will face temperatures up to 140°F - hot enough to stay outside for 6 hours max before the body loses its ability to cool itself.
"Melting permafrost is releasing ancient microbes that today’s humans have never been exposed to—and as a result have no resistance to. Diseases spread by mosquitoes and ticks are rampant as these species flourish in the changed climate..." And antibiotic resistance caused by humans' consumption of animal products will cause modern medicine to greatly lose its effectiveness, leaving us even more vulnerable to disease.
And the world would have become so hostile that around 1/3 of Earth's plant and animal species will have vanished...
Click here to read more about what the world will look like if we don't cut our emissions in half NOW.
3.Plastic and other waste, which can take centuries to degrade, pollutes oceans, forests, animal habitats, landfills, and cities, entangling and killing wildlife and ending up (in micro form) in the food we humans eat.
"Since 1950, it’s estimated that we have produced billions of tonnes of plastic," all of which can take up to 500 years to decompose, slowed by the preserving effect of tightly packed landfills and deep oceans that don't get enough light or erosion for decomposition to occur.
A huge plastic polluter comes from fishing. Not only do common fishing methods often destroy the ocean's ecosystems by dragging massive nets across the ocean floor (mistakenly catching, needlessly killing, and dumping back into the ocean tens of thousands of animals like sharks, dolphins, sea turtles, and swordfish), but also, "500,000 to 1 million tons of fishing gear are discarded or lost in the ocean every year. Discarded nets, lines, and ropes now make up about 46% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch." (Source)
Other massive sources of pollution include personal care products (shampoo and facial care bottles, etc...) and fast-fashion.
Click here to see what you can do to help, including zero-waste beauty and home suggestions. :)

4. Greedy deforestation: the burning, cutting, and clearing of precious forests (including the Amazon) driven by humans' desire to make space for cattle (animal agriculture), harvest cheap palm oil, and produce paper and other wood materials. Some of the world's most threatened forests include the Amazon ("the world’s largest forest is also the site of the biggest projected losses. More than one-quarter of the region will be without forests... Cattle ranching and agriculture are the dominant causes of deforestation...."), the Congo Basin (one of the most important wilderness areas on Earth, [containing] 20 percent of the world’s tropical forests and the highest biological diversity in Africa.), and Eastern Australia (key species affected include koalas, possums, gliders and tree-dependent birds that suffer in order to make space for livestock that humans can eat). (Source)
Deforestation destroys the homes of precious and diverse animals and the resources that indigenous peoples rely on.
It also quickens the pace of global warming, since the CO2 that trees store are released when they are burnt down, and get stuck in the atmosphere, warming the Earth.
Click here to see how you can help.
6. Poor water, air, and soil quality, and more...
It's also important to address that these things affect marginalized groups at higher rates than they affect others.
Our negative effects on the Earth are tragedies, they aren't natural, and they aren't what the Earth and all of it's inhabitants deserve. And unfortunately, every single human plays a part in them. But it's not entirely our fault. Big corporations, and systems in place, aren't working hard enough to protect the Earth. We need to make our voices heard and demand that they prioritize the environment. (Skip to the activism section here.) In the meantime, we can make changes in our daily lives that make valuable impacts on the world around us. Keep reading to see how you can help, in little and big ways, in your everyday life. And keep in mind that not everyone is meant to do every single tip! Do as much as YOU can! Don't be too hard on yourself, and don't give up! :)

The Little Things...
Here are my ideas for simple and little things that ANYONE can do! They don't take much time or effort but definitely make a difference when we all try to do them!
✿Always carry a set of reusable bags and utensils with you, and turn away plastic utensils and bags when eating out. {Area of Concern: Pollution, Global Warming (caused by the production of plastic and goods)}
-Reusable bags
-Reusable metal straw with silicone tip (for biters + extra comfort + no weird taste). These are way better than paper straws since they don't get soggy!
-Mermaid Straw's Ocean Blue Stainless Steel Straw
(don't forget to add silicone tips! They come in lots of fun colors!)
-Metal boba/milkshake straw
-Mermaid Straw's Mermaid Boba Straw
(don't forget to add silicone tips! They come in lots of fun colors!)
-Thermal for drinks
-18 oz Hydroflask
-24 oz Takeya Insulated Bottle with Straw
-Fork, spoon, chopstick set
-Cloth (instead of a napkin) {Area of Concern: Deforestation, Pollution, Global Warming}
✿Never litter! Always carry your trash with you until you can find a garbage or recycling can. {Area of Concern: Pollution, Extinction (waste harms animals)} And...
✿Take some time to research the recycling rules in your city. Make sure you always recycle when you can and don't add non-recyclables to your curbside recycling bin, as sometimes it can contaminate the whole thing. {Area of Concern: Pollution, Global Warming, Deforestation, Extinction}
- Earth911.com is extremely helpful for this!
✿Unplug any appliance that is not in use, even if they are off (it saves more energy and money!) {Area of Concern: Global Warming, Extinction (caused by warming)}
-Lights
-TV and gaming systems (make sure they are properly turn off first so you don't damage them!)
-Fan
-Phone charger, laptop charger
-Toaster, microwave, and other kitchen appliances, etc.
✿Try to support eco-friendly, local, and/or small businesses! And avoid really bad ones! {Area of Concern: Pollution, Global Warming, more...}
*Avoid! Fast-fashion websites, which cause a lot of pollution and often rip-off small, independent designers. They also usually don't pay their employees fairly and can even use child labor.
✿Switch to an ethical bank. Most of the big, common banks fund anti-environment activities, like the Dakota Access Pipeline, which transported oil by cutting through the sacred land of Native peoples. The Standing Rock Sioux say "the Dakota Access Pipeline poses a serious risk to the very survival of our Tribe and ... would destroy valuable cultural resources." (Source)
✿ Switch to a bidet instead of toilet paper. They are more sanitary for your body, and prevent the cutting down of ancient and precious forests. Or, you could use eco-friendly recycled toilet paper! See this video to watch Greenpeace discuss toilet paper with Fox News. {Area of Concern: Deforestation}
✿Talk to your friends and family about sustainability. The more people that are interested, the more the Earth will benefit! {Area of Concern: All!}
✿Du more individual research. Watch documentaries, follow eco-figures on social media, read books and articles, etc... Knowledge is power!! {Area of Concern: All!}
Here are some good documentaries (suggested by the internet - I haven't watched all) to start with:
Before the Flood - Leonardo DiCaprio teams up with National Geographic to sound the alarm on climate change, with moving accounts of the rising sea levels, deforestation and other destruction that humans have wrought. The film arms viewers with solutions, from reducing meat consumption to voting for leaders who will fight for our future.
Virunga - "Virunga follows a brave group of park rangers in their fight to preserve the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park... The park and its inhabitants are under constant threat from poachers, armed militia and companies exploiting its natural resources."
Our Planet - "...Awe-inspiring scenes of an interconnected ecosystem, underscored by the clear message that humans are ruining its balance. As Attenborough warns: “What we do in the next 20 years will determine the future for all life on Earth.”
Earthlings - "Narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, the film uses hidden-camera footage to show the exploitation of animals across five industries: pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research."
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
— Margaret Mead
Food!
Eating food is something we do multiple times a day, and depending on what we eat, it can actually have extremely detrimental effects on the environment. (Which aren't always our faults, but greedy corporations' instead.)In fact, "[eating animals] is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction." (Source) If we make some conscious decisions with the Earth in mind, though, we can make a massive change!
(Note: never force or push yourself to eat a certain way for any reason. Food should be an enjoyable and comforting experience, and I make sure to keep this in mind in ALL of my food tips!:) )
First, let's briefly address the impacts of the food we eat, focusing on two main and important subjects: animal agriculture and palm oil.
Watch the impactful videos below for a quick intro. (In the "Deforestation" section as well...
✿As we can see from the videos, foods that we eat every day (animal products and palm oil) are a leading contributor to deforestation! Remember the Australian and Amazon forest fires that were in the news not too long ago? A lot of us banded together to spread awareness, sign petitions, and donate money, failing to address the cause of the problem: the fires are human lit to make way for the cattle that most of us eat! And palm oil (which is in anything from instant noodles to ice cream and packaged bread) drives the cutting down of forest that house precious wildlife, especially the orangutans from the video above.
✿Deforestation also ties in with global warming, since burning trees down releases the CO2 that they store. With nowhere else to go, the CO2 gets stuck in our atmosphere and warms the Earth.
✿Animals that are eaten (particularly beef) also produce methane, a gas that is "25-100 times more destructive than CO2 on a 20 year time frame." In fact, "Animal agriculture is responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation."(Source)
✿Animals farmed for food occupy land that could be better used for homeless or refugees, or to farm enough plants to end world hunger. ("Livestock covers 45% of the Earth’s total land.")
"We are currently growing enough food to feed 10 billion people," but "worldwide, at least 50% of grain is fed to livestock." "82% of starving children live in countries where food is fed to animals, and the animals are eaten by western countries." (Source)
✿"80% of antibiotic sold in the US are for livestock." Eating animals is causing antibiotic resistance in humans that may deem modern medicine virtually worthless one day. See video
✿Caution; graphic language. 18+ only. And the systems that we have in place for farming animals today violates animal rights by causing great and unnecessary suffering, including murder by gas chamber, boiling water, electrocution. "Hens and chickens are forced to pass upside down by electrified water. And cows have their skulls drilled with a special gun, which introduces a retractable bullet into their brains." "Cows and pigs, animals of great weight, are lifted from the floor by their rear legs, causing them tears and breaks," before their necks are sliced.(Source)...
...The murder of baby animals by brute force with a hammer, and the ripping apart of families when baby cows are taken from their milk-producing mothers after non-consensual insemination. Mothers and babies feel happiness for the first time in their abused lifetimes, and when they are taken away from each other, they often cry out and chase after one other, and can be seen waiting for each other to return. Male baby cows in the dairy industry are sent to slaughter, deemed worthless since they cannot produce milk.
Click here for a more extensive list of animal agriculture facts.
Eating sea animals is also a major problem, as the amounts of animals that are harvested - and the ways in which we catch them - are causing sea life to go extinct. Also, tens of thousands of dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, and other bycatch are caught in fishing gear and die needlessly before being tossed back into the ocean... And tons of discarded fishing net clog the oceans and entangle, injure, and are eaten by innocent sea life, killing them as well.
"It is estimated that over 300,000 small whales, dolphins, and porpoises die from entanglement in fishing nets each year, making this the single largest cause of mortality for small cetaceans." (Source)
So... How can we help? Here are a few ideas:
✿Eat less meat, seafood and dairy With the amount of substitutes out there today, you can still eat all of your favorite meals, and restaurants and fast food chains are rapidly adding plant-based items to their menus!

Gardein - Golden Crispy Fishless Filet

Silk - Ultra Protein Soy Milk

✿Remember not to CUT food out of your diet. Food should be a fun and comforting experience. Look for new and fun plant-based foods to ADD to your diet and they will naturally replace the harmful items!
✿In the meantime, try to eat sustainable foods.
-Look for the Marine Stewardship Council's sustainable seafood seal
-Use SeafoodWatch.org to check if your seafood is sustainable.
-Look for sustainable palm oil products (there's evidence that ALL palm oil products are bad for the environment, so try to avoid it at all costs if you can)
“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, we’d all be vegetarian.”-Paul McCartney
✿If you have space, start an at-home compost bin for food scraps! When wasted foods breaks down, it produces methane, which is really bad for global warming!
✿Don't be scared to talk to your friends and family about these issues, as it's what drives change!
✿Write to your favorite restaurants, fast-food places, and grocery stores and ask them to provide more plant-based options and to ditch palm oil.
✿If you live in an area where plant-based resources are scarce, write to your local government and ask them to provide more for your area. Don't forget to tell them the reasons why it's so important to you!
✿Be kind to yourself and proud of yourself for being brave and compassionate and standing up for the environment and animals!
Visit the website HappyCow to find a plant-based restaurant near you!

“No animal needs to die in order for me to live. And that makes me feel good.”
-Howard Lynan
Shopping
A lot of the items we buy end up in landfills, or worse, oceans, animal habitats, and cities, where they will sit for centuries, unable to fully break down, and harming the Earth in the process. We can help by simply buying less things, and by using using eco-friendly, reusable alternatives over single-use plastic!
It's definitely okay to buy things for fun - I do it all the time! But make sure it's something you want to keep around for a while instead of throwing it away!
Before you buy things, try to ask yourself:
1.Do I really need this?
2.Can I get this second-hand (thrifting is the best, since you can get trendy, unique items at a much better quality and price! There are also reselling apps like Depop and Mercari!
3.Can I use an eco-friendly alternative instead?... Switch to bamboo toothbrushes, reusable grocery bags, stainless steel straws (with rubber tips - no weird taste or feeling), shampoo and conditioner bars, etc. And pack lunch, snacks, or picnic supplies in reusable tupperware instead of single use ziploc bags. Check EarthHero.com for low-waste supplies, and here are some more fun ideas:
Straws and Bottles
-Mermaid Straw's Ocean Blue Stainless Steel Straw
-Mermaid Straw's Mermaid Boba Straw
(don't forget to add silicone tips! They come in lots of fun colors!)
-18 oz Hydroflask
-24 oz Takeya Insulated Bottle with Straw
Hair Care
-Lush's Milkshake Scented Conditioner Bar
-Lush's Glory Conditioner for curls and textured hair (their plastic pots are made from recycled and recyclable materials. Bring them back to Lush and they recycle them for you)
-Lush's Curl Power Hydrating Cream for curls and textured hair (their plastic pots are made from recycled and recyclable materials. Bring them back to Lush and they recycle them for you)
Face & Body
-Plastic Free Lip Balm (they have plenty unique and mouth-watering scents, including Chocolate Cheesecake, Hibiscus Punch, Lemon Chiffon, Lychee, Orange Creamsicle Pineapple, and more!)
-Solid Eco-Friendly Lotion in Vanilla Bean Horchata and Coconut Snowball (they have plenty more unique scents too!)
-Soap saver bag, biodegradable cucumber loofah, or ramie washcloth instead of a plastic loofah
Bamboo Toothbrushes and Dental
Laundry
-Dropps plastic-free laundry detergent pods
-Guppyfriend Microplastic collector washing bag
✿Avoid fast-fashion at all costs! Websites that sell super cheap, low-quality, but trendy clothes are popping up everywhere, and they can be very tempting, but their impact on the world is undoubtedly devastating. They create massive amounts of global warming and pollution, rip off small, independent designers, and pay their employees unfairly low wages, even using child labor!
A lot of these fast fashion places are well known stores that you see on the street and in mall, so try to research a place's ethics before you buy, and don't believe the lies they tell on their website, be sure to dig a little deeper!
✿Try to always research a company before you buy from them. Do they pay their employees fair wages with benefits... Do they use sustainable manufacturing techniques...
✿Try to buy locally, or at least from your country if possible to reduce emissions from flights.
✿Support your library or buy second-hand books instead of new ones to save paper!
Transportation & Travel
✿Try to take a train instead of a plane when travelling if you can! Obviously this isn't possible all the time (limited vacation time, destination, cost...) but if it is an option for you, try it out and you could lesson your carbon footprint!
✿Try to take public transportation when travelling (or all the time IF IT IS SAFE where you live - you're safety is #1 please be careful.
✿Try to carpool! The more people that go together in ne car, the less emissions per person!
✿Try local vegan food when you're on vacation! As mentioned in the "Food" section, animal products account for 13-18% of global warming gasses, more than all forms of transportation combined! Reduce your carbon footprint a little when travelling (especially if you took and emission-heavy flight) by eating a few plant-based meals on your trip! Vegan options and restaurants are popping up everywhere, including New Orleans, New York City, Tokyo, and Disneyland + Disneyworld! Use the website Happy Cow to find them! I included a gallery of some food below for inspiration :)

✿After an emission-heavy vacation, consider donating to a tree-planting organization (trees absorb global warming gasses) like One Tree Planted
Recycling & Waste
Pollution is a massive issue that we must try to combat immediately! Not only does waste often end up in oceans, entangling and killing sea life, but it also clutters human and animal habitats in almost every corner of the world! Seeing pictures can be frightening and/or overwhelming, but we can do a lot to help solve the problem and stop adding more waste to the world!

Here are some ways you can help!
✿When we buy things online, they often come wrapped in unneccesary layers of harmful plastic. Instead, try to buy from eco-friendly companies that practice sustainable manufacturing and packaging procedures! To those that don't, try to comment on their social media pages, write letters, and/or email them, asking them to be more sustainable in exchange for your brand loyalty! When one company changes, others will start following suit until most of the market is eco-friendly! Yay!!!
✿Buy bulk groceries when you can, to skip packaging! Make sure to bring your own reusable containers if the store lets you! You can save a lot of money and definitely a lot of waste by doing this!
✿Try low-waste products at home, in your bathroom, kitchen, beauty routine, etc! I love shopping at EarthHero.com, as they have so many helpful low-waste items!
Here are some low-waste products I recommend! (Already in the "Shopping" section...
Straws and Bottles
-Mermaid Straw's Ocean Blue Stainless Steel Straw
-Mermaid Straw's Mermaid Boba Straw
(don't forget to add silicone tips! They come in lots of fun colors!)
-18 oz Hydroflask
-24 oz Takeya Insulated Bottle with Straw
Hair Care
-Lush's Milkshake Scented Conditioner Bar
-Lush's Glory Conditioner for curls and textured hair (their plastic pots are made from recycled and recyclable materials. Bring them back to Lush and they recycle them for you)
-Lush's Curl Power Hydrating Cream for curls and textured hair (their plastic pots are made from recycled and recyclable materials. Bring them back to Lush and they recycle them for you)
Face & Body
-Plastic Free Lip Balm (they have plenty unique and mouth-watering scents, including Chocolate Cheesecake, Hibiscus Punch, Lemon Chiffon, Lychee, Orange Creamsicle Pineapple, and more!)
-Solid Eco-Friendly Lotion in Vanilla Bean Horchata and Coconut Snowball (they have plenty more unique scents too!)
-Soap saver bag, biodegradable cucumber loofah, or ramie washcloth instead of a plastic loofah
Bamboo Toothbrushes and Dental
Laundry
-Dropps plastic-free laundry detergent pods
-Guppyfriend Microplastic collector washing bag
✿Take the time to research the recycling policies in your city and make sure to recycle everything you can, keeping non-recyclables OUT of your recycling bin so they don't contaminate the whole bin!
✿Eat less or more sustainably-caught seafood, since tons of discarded fishing net clogs the oceans and entangles, injures, and are eaten by innocent sea life, killing them. Fishing nets account for 46% of garbage in the Pacific Garbage Patch. (Source)

Helping Animals
I love all animals, from dogs and cats to cows, pigs, tigers, sea turtles, alligators, penguins, and grizzly bears! and I know a lot of you do too. Here are some ways to help them.
✿Never litter! A lot of litter ends up in the ocean and can entangle, cut, and kill a lot of sea life. If you are old enough (or with a parent's supervision) do a beach clean up! I like to bring a little bag with me every time I go to the beach and take a few minutes to clean up the trash I see so that it doesn't hurt the animals. I always find plenty! Make sure to dispose of it properly in a waste bin!
✿Never support sea animal shows!
✿Never support places that hold large sea mammals, such as orcas, sharks, or dolphins in tanks. They naturally have the big, wide, ocean to swim in, and being stuck in a tank is like being confined in one room for your entire life!
✿Speciesism is when we treat certain animals (like dogs and cats) much better than others (like cows and chickens) even though they are just as intelligent, loving, and feeling as each other.
✿Only buy cruelty-free products!
✿Tell your family to adopt pets instead of buying them from a breeder (or breeding them at home), because there are countless animals out there in need of a loving family. Why not help them out instead? Breeding can also cause problems in the animals. :(
Activism
✿Write to your local government and businesses and ask them to make eco-friendly changes
✿Talk to your friends and family to get them thinking about becoming more sustainable.
✿Join local marches or eco-friendly protests (18+ or adult supervision required, please be safe!
Next steps...
Helping the environment and being sustainable can sometimes feel like a monumental task, but when you incorporate little steps into your life, it becomes second nature!
I don't hold myself back from having a happy and fulfilling life - no one should - but I always make sure to balance my enjoyment with my responsibilities to the environment.
✿Remember YOUR Reason: Why do you want to live sustainably? Whether it's for yourself, your family, future generations, animals, or nature, try to remind yourself of your reason, in whatever way feels right to you! This can be anything from going on hikes or visits to the beach to enjoy nature's company, watching documentaries or videos with your family and friends, watching cute wildlife videos online, volunteering for wildlife, or having fun cooking up new plant-based recipes!
✿Remember that it is okay to make mistakes, and try to use your personal reason to help you get back on track when you're ready
✿Brainstorm the ways YOU, personally, can make changes in your every day life. For example, is it right for YOU to switch out meat and dairy for Beyond Meat and oat milk, build a compost system in your backyard, go thrifting instead of shopping, or simply start using low-waste toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthwash? Start making changes TODAY! :)
✿Sign environmental petitions.
✿Be proud of yourself for the changes that you have made. You are doing an amazing job, and I and the Earth thank you so much!
